We're thankful for him bringing us out of the doldrums but there is no doubt we despise the 15 second man for taking the job of our rival 10 years ago. However, despite all of that, he's been doing some things that I think make him appealing. Obviously, I do not like Rick Pitino the coach. The Man Possessed according to that 1996 Sports Illustrated is dead to me. Since that great day last week when Morehead State sent the Cardinals of Louisville on vacation, Rick has committed to being an in studio guest for the NCAA tournament coverage.
For the man with the huge ego, he does know the game of basketball. He has a personality that is addicting, and knows how to work being in front of the camera. Sure he's been giving UK props in the studio and today on ESPN's Sports Nation. That is commendable but even outside of that, he's been a real pleasure to watch and listen to his breakdowns. I think we know what Rick's next gig will be once he rides off into the sunset from coaching. That brings me to an interesting question.
When will Rick hang it up? Although he has seemingly questioned publicly whether his time is winding down, I do think he is not done with coaching. It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if we have seen the last of Rick Pitino on the sidelines though. We all know of the public scrutiny he has endured the past two years to his indiscretions and philandering ways. Not being cast into a positive light is bound to bruise the ego of Mr. Narcissist. He could redeem that love and affection that he once had (although probably not from UK fans) if he became a permanent fixture on CBS or ESPN. I personally wouldn't mind watching him. The insights are great.
This isn't anything to get rumors swirling. I have no more inside info about what Rick Pitino does than I do about the price of tea in China. I just wanted to share an opinion and post some food for thought. It's something to think about because we know Slick Rick isn't going to coach forever. It just leaves us wondering how soon if not already when he will hang it up?
